ABCs and 123s
You may notice some things have moved in the youth room! Youth staff is in the middle of creating a Concept Book Collection. This collection will bring together all of our books on ABCs, 123s, colors, and shapes in one place, making them much easier to find and browse. The Concept Collection will be located directly across from the Youth Services desk where the non-circulating reference collection used to be. The non-circulating reference collection is now shelved at the very beginning of the nonfiction section. We expect the Concept Collection to make searching for these much-used and much-loved books easier for little learners and their caregivers.
We Recommend . . .
The Youth Services Parenting Collection contains many books on a variety of issues of interest to parents. Are you wondering how to incorporate environmental awareness into your family life? Our collection includes these green materials:
www.naturemoms.com is one website where you could begin your search for green parenting information and support on the internet.
Why are Databases Better than Google?
As your children head back to school, it is important that you know about every resource available to help them succeed. With that in mind, we want to encourage you and your students to use the youth databases provided by the library.
A database is a collection of information organized and searchable by subject, typically in digital form. Because of the organizational scheme, search results are relevant to the general topic, making research much more efficient. The youth databases we subscribe to are designed for young people, the content is age appropriate, and the interface is easy to use. The information is provided by noted publishers so you can be confident of its accuracy. All of this is just a fancy way of saying databases are better, safer, and easier to use than Google for school work.
Click here to see our youth databases page or find it yourself by visiting www.btpl.org and selecting youth databases/websites from the find it online tab.

The World Languages Collection in the Youth Services Department houses fiction and nonfiction books in over 40 different languages. This collection is a wonderful representation of our culturally diverse community and it serves dual purposes. It can be enjoyed by patrons for whom English is not their primary language and it can be used by students who are learning a foreign language either for school or for recreation. The books in this collection range from very basic sight words to simple board books to very popular titles like Harry Potter and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Make sure to take a look the next time you are in the youth room!
