Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service is designated to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. Below are a few of the many local volunteer opportunities available if you’re looking for somewhere to help.
Friends of the Bloomfield Township Public Library
Volunteers are involved in book sales and accepting book donations.
Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center
Volunteers of all ages and abilities are involved with visual arts education, exhibitions, and other creative experiences.
The Birmingham Museum
Birmingham’s history is preserved through its ongoing story. Volunteers are involved as docents, greeters, and researchers.
Bloomfield Historical Society
The history and heritage of the Bloomfield area are promoted. Volunteers are involved in membership development and Board positions, when available.
The Community House
The Community House is offering classes, events, and award-winning childcare programs. Volunteers assist with classes.
Cranbrook includes The Academy of Art, The Art Museum, The Institute of Science, The House and Gardens, The Center for Collection and Research, and schools covering Pre-K through 12th grade. Volunteers assist with classes and tours.
Johnson Nature Center
This 1800s homestead provides walking trails filled with wildlife, native plants, a pond, and a river. Volunteers work with trail operations and events.
Birmingham Bloomfield Community Coalition
BBCC works building awareness and mobilizing the community to prevent the abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs with a focus on youth. Volunteers can become involved as sponsors or help at programs and events.
CARE House of Oakland County
CARE provides services to victims of child abuse and neglect. Volunteers work as special advocates, child assistants, and by working on special events.
A 24-hour crisis service aids children, teens and adults dealing with substance abuse and suicide. Volunteers assist with crisis helpline and community outreach.
Habitat for Humanity of Oakland County
Donors, homeowners, neighbors, and volunteers work together to build better living environments. Volunteers work in construction (no experience necessary) or at Re-Stores in Farmington Hills and Waterford.
HAVEN aids victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Volunteers assist with the support line, life skills mentoring and community engagement.
Oakland Literacy Council
Trained tutors provide assistance to adults in Oakland County who struggle to read, write and understand English. Volunteer tutors meet two hours a week with their students for at least one year.
