On Demand Lecture: The 19th Century Origins of Football: From Folk Football to Soccer, Rugby and American Football
Part of our History Comes Alive lecture series.
Historian Jim Craft’s presentation will recount the history of early forms of folk football that have existed in Britain for nearly 1000 years. Jim will then explore how the game evolved between 1863 and 1913 into the three most prominent forms of football we know today: Soccer, Rugby Union, and Gridiron (American) Football. This is largely the story of three different approaches to making the traditional folk game safer and more interesting.
