american lightning book jacket

In 1910 the Los Angeles Times building was bombed. Several people died and many more were injured in the horrendous inferno. Since the newspaper’s owner was a zealous union hater, the bombing was presumed to be the work of labor union activists. Los Angeles city officials hire Billy Burns, America’s greatest detective, to find the perpetrators. The exhaustive manhunt led by Burns is the driving force in this work of true crime, but the author also focuses on two other contemporary American giants, D. W. Griffith and Clarence Darrow. Griffith, America’s first filmmaker was sympathetic to the plight of the working man and portrayed them in his films. Clarence Darrow, the prominent defense attorney,  ultimately defends the men who are charged with the bombing. A fascinating bit of lesser-known American history.     Val 10/9/2019
