Celestial and Roy have been married less than two years when Roy is falsely convicted of raping an old woman.  He is sentenced to twelve years in a Louisiana prison, and Celestial is left to wait.  Written as a series of letters and interior monologues by Celestial, Roy and Celestial’s friend since childhood, Dre, the book shows the deterioration of a marriage and the blossoming of new love.  But more than that, it bears witness to how fragile success and a stable, happy life can be for African-Americans.  The characters are well drawn and drive the narrative.  This is a book that will stay with you long after the reading is done.     Elaine  8/3/2018
