THE LIFE WE BURY / Allan Eskens

Joe is a college student, struggling to make a future for himself away from his drunken mother and autistic little brother.  A college English assignment brings him into contact with Carl, an elderly ex-convict who has been released after serving 30 years in prison because he is dying.  Joe expects to complete a superficial interview and then write his paper, but during a series of interviews with Carl, Joe begins to doubt whether he raped and murdered the young victim.  As he and a friend delve into the case, they put themselves in harm’s way.  A compelling read.     Val 3/27/2019
