Ash is a football (rugby) player. Each time he takes a hit on the field, his life changes. He moves into another dimension, and keeps on bouncing through worlds that are slightly different from his previous reality.
At first, his changes are small and insignificant. However, they quickly turn into universes where society is stuck in the past and he finds himself looking at life with through an entirely different lens.
And if he isn’t careful, the world he’s learning to see more clearly could blink out of existence…
Shusterman raises a variety of issues in the story including diversity, race, sexuality, & politics, making you think about the judgements you make and how your choices impact others. What would you do if you were always the center of the universe, and then you weren’t? How would you use your gifts and talents to change the world around you and impact others?
Overall, Game Changer is surprising & unique. Shusterman’s writing style makes the story an easy read, all while rolling in the complexities of current times in a discerning way. It is worth the read just to bare witness to Ash’s character development. A great book for reader’s groups or for topic discussions.
