Blond girl with fingers crossed behind her back

Bad Sister / Charise Mericle Harper

This autobiographical graphic novel is about Charise adjusting to life with her brother, Daniel. Charise resents having to share everything with Daniel. Her cat, Sandy, becomes the “family cat” as Daniel gets older. Daniel wrecks her drawings and she’s told to just draw another picture. Daniel recognizes social cues more quickly than Charise. When the resentment gets to be too much, she takes it out on Daniel, and she always gets in trouble for it. She feels ashamed and invisible to everyone around her. As they grow older, their competitiveness and Charise’s meanness escalate until one day, she really hurts Daniel. Perfect for siblings struggling with their rivalry (and for those who have moved past it), this book is recommended for kids ages 8-12.
