Book cover of "Maya" by Mahak Jain, illustrated by Elly MacKay. Picture of a girl in the jungle.

Maya / Mahak Jain

When the power goes out, Maya misses how her father used to light candles and tell her stories. Her mother tells Maya about the first monsoon, and the banyan tree that saved everyone from the flooding. She said a little girl was afraid of the monsoon until the banyan tree grew so large that its branches could hold tigers and monkeys while giving shade to a peacock and hiding a snake and an elephant. Still unable to sleep, Maya explores the banyan tree in her imagination, and finds that what appears to be dark may actually hold some light. Recommended for ages 4 & up.
