Bad Badger: A Love Story / Maryrose Wood

Youth - What We're Reading | Published January 15, 2026

Septimus is content living in his cozy house with a beautiful view of the sea. He enjoys opera, omelets, and sipping tea while watching the sunset. Though his lifestyle is far from typical for a badger, Septimus knows he is not quite like the rest. Often alone in his interests, he longs for a companion to share the simple pleasures of his life.

Before long, he finds an unlikely friend in a seagull he nicknames Gully. Septimus eagerly awaits his friend’s visit every week. He soon discovers that keeping a friend is harder than finding one, though. He navigates the boundaries of what comforts he is and is not willing to give up along with learning how to make space for his flying, sea-loving friend. In the process, he comes to understand that true friendship requires patience, understanding, and an open heart, and that meaningful bonds can form between even the most unlikely of creatures.
