The silhouettes of two children are seen as they peer into a mysterious cave.

Wish Monster / J. A. White

Violet is inconsolable when her beloved dog passes away from old age. But Hudson, a young man who goes to the same school as Violet, is the only one in town who remembers the event even happening–because Violet’s dog is actually still alive and well. It turns out that there is a wish monster living in a cave in the town, and Violet has used her wish to bring her dog back. Violet is sure that the only thing the monster wants in exchange for this gift is for her to let another person know about its existence so that it can continue to grant wishes. Hudson, however, begins to think it sounds pretty fishy that a monster would make wishes come true without asking for any real payment–also, why is Hudson the only one in town who can tell that reality changes every time someone makes a wish? Ages 8 and up.
