From apples, pears, and cranberries to pumpkins, squash, potatoes, soybeans, and corn, fall is harvest time in Michigan. But delicious and nutritious fruits and vegetables are not the only harvests happening here this fall. On Sunday, November 1, Bloomfield Township Public Library, in partnership with the Bloomfield Historical Society, will gather the community for the annual History Harvest. The event will take place at the Library from 1–3 p.m.
The History Harvest is a unique opportunity for the public to help preserve local history by donating local history items. Yearbooks, photographs, city and telephone directories, printed ephemera (menus, advertisements, postcards), and other local publications (like newsletters) from the Bloomfield area and surrounding communities are of particular interest.
During the event, donations will be evaluated by a librarian and, if accepted, the items will become part of the Library’s History Collection. The collection is available for in-library use and accessible online.
The open-to-the-public event is also an opportunity for people to get answers to their local history research questions and to become more familiar with the Library’s History Collection and the Bloomfield Historical Society.
“Our local history belongs to all of us,” said Laura J. Kraly, Head of the Library’s Adult and Teen Services Department. “By creating an easy way for people to contribute to the collection as well as learn more about the resources currently available, this event helps make preserving our rich local history a community endeavor, not just an institutional one.”
No registration is required to attend the event or to donate.
